Alias: Abbatelli, Patella

Origin: Lucca, Tuscany. Moved to Sicily with Duccio Abbatelli in 1237.

Seat: Palermo, Palazzo Abatellis.

Notable people:

  • Giovanni Abbatelli (or Patella) bought in 1431 the county of Cammarata from the Moncada family for 40,000 gold florins. He also bought the fiefs of Pietra and Cefala' (Villabianca) and half of the duties over the fruits of Palermo (Muscia). He held high offices of state and allied with the powerful Chiaramonte family.
  • Federico Abbatelli, son of Giovanni, invested of the title of Conte di Cammarata in 1451 and by way of his mother also of that of Count of Modica.
  • Margherita Abbatelli and Branciforte, last of the family, married with her uncle Count Federico Branciforte, Captain General of the army. The count was implicated in the conspiracy against the viceroy Ugo Moncada, and was executed. Margherita then remarried with Blasco Branciforte who was in the opposite faction. 
  • Girolamo Branciforti and Abbatelli, son of Margherita, renown scholar. 

Another branch of the family survived in Catania.
